The Jews' claim of a short punishment in the hereafter and God's refutation of them
Translation
✧ [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some obscure words] Ibn Hishām said: fa-bāʾū bi-ghaḍabin means they confessed to it and bore it. Aʿshā of Banū Qays b. Thaʿlabah said: I make peace with you until you confess to the like of it, like the cry of a pregnant woman whom her midwives have seated for delivery. (Ibn Hishām said: yassarat-hā means they seated her for childbirth.) This verse is in an ode of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: So (they earned) anger upon anger—His anger upon them for what they had neglected of the Torah while it was with them—and anger for their disbelief in this prophet ﷺ whom God sent to them. Then He reproached them with the raising of the Mount over them, and their taking the calf as a god instead of their Lord. God—exalted be He—says to Muḥammad ﷺ: Say: "If the Last Abode with God is exclusively yours, apart from other people, then long for death, if you are truthful"—that is, call down death upon whichever of the two parties is the more false before God. But they refused that to the Messenger of God ﷺ. God—may His praise be exalted—says to His prophet ﷺ: And they will never long for it, because of what their hands have sent ahead—that is, because of their knowledge of what they possess of knowledge about you, and their disbelief in that. So it is said: had they longed for it on the day he said that to them, no Jew would have remained on the face of the earth but would have died. Then He mentioned their desire for the life of this world and long life, so He—exalted be He—said: And you will surely find them the most covetous of people for life—the Jews—and of those who associate others with God; one of them would love to be granted a life of a thousand years, but it will not remove him from the punishment that he should be granted life—that is, it will not save him from the punishment. That is because the associator does not hope for a resurrection after death, so he loves long life, while the Jew has known what he will have in the Hereafter of disgrace because of what he neglected of the knowledge he possessed. Then God—exalted be He—said: Say: "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel—for it is he who brought it down upon your heart by God's permission."
