The Jews' claim of a short punishment in the hereafter and God's refutation of them
Translation
✧ [The Jews' claim of the brevity of punishment in the Hereafter and Allah's refutation of them] Ibn Isḥāq said: A mawlā of Zayd b. Thābit narrated to me from ʿIkrimah, or from Saʿīd b. Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, the Jews were saying: “The duration of this world is only seven thousand years, and Allah will punish people in the Fire for each thousand years of the days of this world with one day in the Fire of the days of the Hereafter. Thus it is only seven days, then the punishment will cease.” So Allah revealed concerning that saying of theirs: “And they say, 'The Fire will not touch us except for numbered days.' Say, 'Have you taken a covenant with Allah? For Allah will never break His covenant. Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?' Nay, whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him — that is, whoever acts like your deeds and disbelieves like what you have disbelieved in, his disbelief encompasses whatever good he has with Allah — those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally, that is, forever and ever. And those who believe and do righteous deeds — those are the companions of the Garden; they will abide therein eternally, that is, whoever believes in what you have disbelieved in and acts according to what you have abandoned of His religion, for them is the Garden, abiding therein forever. He informs them that the reward for good and evil is everlasting upon its people forever, with no cessation.” Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Allah (mighty and glorious is He) said, rebuking them: “And when We took the covenant of the Children of Israel” — that is, your covenant — “You shall worship none but Allah, and be good to parents, and to the near of kin, and to orphans, and to the needy, and speak kindly to people, and establish prayer, and give zakāh. Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were averse” — that is, you abandoned all of that, not out of negligence. “And when We took your covenant: You shall not shed your own blood.”
