What was revealed concerning the hypocrites of the Aws and the Khazraj
Translation
✧ [Ibn Hisham’s explanation of some of the obscure words] Ibn Hisham said, quoting Abu ʿUbaydah: “illā amāniyya” means “except recitation,” because the ummī is one who reads but does not write. He says: they do not know the Book except that they recite it. Ibn Hisham said: quoted from Abu ʿUbaydah and Yūnus that they both interpreted this from the Arabs regarding the saying of God, mighty and glorious; Abu ʿUbaydah narrated that to me. Ibn Hisham said: Yūnus b. Ḥabīb the grammarian and Abu ʿUbaydah narrated to me that the Arabs say “tamannā” in the sense of “read.” In the Book of God, blessed and exalted: “And We sent not before you any messenger or prophet except that when he recited [tamannā], Satan cast into his recitation [umniyyatihi].” He said: Abu ʿUbaydah the grammarian recited to me: “He recited the Book of God at the beginning of his night and at its end; then came the appointed death of the fates.” He also recited to me: “He recited the Book of God at night, alone, as David recited the Psalms at leisure.” The singular of amānī is umniyyah. And amānī also means a man’s wishing for wealth or other than that. Ibn Isḥāq said: “They only conjecture,” meaning they do not know the Book nor understand what is in it, and they deny your prophethood by conjecture. And they said: “The Fire will not touch us except for a limited number of days.” Say: “Have you taken a covenant with God? For God will not break His covenant. Or do you say about God what you do not know?”
