What was revealed concerning the hypocrites of the Aws and the Khazraj
Translation
✧ [Ibn Hishām’s commentary on some uncommon words] Ibn Hishām said: openly, that is, visibly to us, with nothing concealing it from us. Abū al-Akhzar al-Ḥamānī, whose name is Qutaybah, said: it lays bare the cavities of the brackish waters; and this line is in a poem of his in rajaz metre. “It lays bare,” he says: it brings the water to light and removes what conceals it of sand and the like. Ibn Isḥāq said: and the seizing of them by the thunderbolt at that time in their heedlessness, then His reviving them after their death, and His shading them with the cloud, and His sending down upon them the manna and the quails, and His saying to them: “And enter the gate in prostration and say: ‘ḥiṭṭah,’” that is, say what I command you so that I may thereby shed your sins from you, and their changing that saying in mockery of His command, and His pardoning them for that after their mockery. [Ibn Hishām’s commentary on some uncommon words] Ibn Hishām said: al-mann is something that used to fall at dawn upon their trees, and they would gather it sweet like honey, and drink it and eat it. Aʿshā of Banū Qays ibn Thaʿlabah said: Were they fed manna and quails in their place, people would not see nourishment thrive in them. And this line is in a poem of his. And al-salwā is a bird, its singular is salwāh, and it is said that it is the quail; and honey is also called al-salwā. Khālid ibn Zuhayr al-Hudhalī said: And he adjured her by God, in truth: “You are indeed sweeter than quails when we rouse them.” And this line is in a poem of his. And ḥiṭṭah: that is, “put away from us our sins.” Ibn Isḥāq said: and part of their changing was, as Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān related to me from Ṣāliḥ, the client of al-Tawʾamah bint Umayyah ibn Khalaf, from Abū Hurayrah, and from one I do not suspect, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Messenger of God ﷺ, that he said: They entered the gate that they were commanded to enter from in prostration, crawling, while they were saying “ḥinṭun fī shaʿīr” (wheat in barley). Ibn Hishām said: another version reads “ḥinṭatun fī shaʿīrah” (a grain of wheat in a grain of barley). Ibn Isḥāq said: and Moses’ asking water for his people, and His command to him to strike the rock with his staff, and there burst forth from it for them twelve springs, for each tribe a spring from which they drank, and every tribe knew its own spring from which it drank, and their saying to Moses ﷺ: “We will never endure one kind of food, so call upon your Lord for us to bring forth for us of what the earth grows, of its herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions.” Ibn Hishām said: al-fūm is wheat. Umayyah ibn Abī al-Ṣalt al-Thaqafī said: Above a throne like cisterns, upon it pieces like the woollen cloth in the marrow of wheat.
