What was revealed concerning the hypocrites of the Aws and the Khazraj
Translation
✧ [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some rare words] Ibn Hishām said: al-andād (peers) means al-amthāl (equals), and the singular of them is nidd. Labīd b. Rabīʿah said:: Aḥmadu llāha fa-lā nidda lahu bi-yadayhi al-khayru mā shāʾa faʿala (I praise God, and He has no peer; in His hands is good; whatever He wills, He does). This verse is in a qaṣīdah of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: That is, do not associate with God other than Him from among the peers that neither benefit nor harm, while you know that you have no Lord who provides for you other than Him; and you have known that what the Messenger calls you to, of His oneness, is the truth in which there is no doubt. 'And if you are in doubt concerning what We have sent down upon Our servant'—that is, in doubt about what he has brought you—'then bring a sūrah like it, and call your witnesses apart from God'—that is, those of your helpers whom you can muster for what you are upon—'if you are truthful. And if you do not, and you will not do, then the truth has become clear to you; so fear the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers'—that is, for whoever is upon the like of what you are upon of disbelief. Then He made them desirous and warned them against breaking the covenant He had taken from them for His Prophet ﷺ when he would come to them, and He mentioned to them the beginning of their creation when He created them, and the matter of their father Adam ﷺ and his affair, and how He dealt with him when he contravened His obedience. Then He said: 'O Children of Israel'—for the learned men of the Jews—'remember My favor which I bestowed upon you'—that is, My trial among you and among your forefathers, when He saved them by it from Pharaoh and his people—'and fulfill My covenant'—which I took upon your necks for My Prophet Aḥmad when he comes to you—'and I will fulfill your covenant'—I will accomplish for you what I promised you for believing in him and following him, by removing what was upon you of the burdens and yokes that were on your necks because of your sins that came from your misdeeds—'and Me alone, fear you'—that is, that I should send down upon you what I sent down upon those before you, of your forefathers, of the punishments that you have known, of metamorphosis and other than that. 'And believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is with you, and be not the first disbeliever in it'—while you have knowledge of it that others do not have—'and Me alone, fear you. And do not confound the truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth while you know'—that is, do not conceal what you have of knowledge of My Messenger and of what he has brought, while you find it with you in what you know of the scriptures in your hands. 'Do you command people to piety and forget yourselves, while you recite the Scripture? Will you not understand?'—that is, do you forbid people from disbelief in what you have of prophethood and the covenant of the Torah, and leave yourselves?—that is, while you disbelieve in what is in them of My covenant to you to believe in My Messenger, and you break My covenant, and you deny what you know of My Book. Then He enumerated their misdeeds against them, and mentioned to them the calf and what they did with it, and His relenting toward them, and His pardoning them, then their saying: 'Show us God openly.'
