Translation

✧ [From the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, the Hypocrites in Madinah] Ibn Isḥāq said: There was no hypocrite man or woman among the Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal that I know of, except that al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Thābit, one of the Banū Kaʿb, the clan of Saʿd b. Zayd, was suspected of hypocrisy and love of the Jews. Ḥassān b. Thābit said: Who will convey to al-Ḍaḥḥāk that his roots Have wearied of Islam, that they may glorify themselves? Do you love the Jews of the Ḥijāz and their religion, The liver of the donkey, and not love Muḥammad? A religion, by my life, that does not accord with our religion, As long as a wild ass roams in the open land and strides. And Julās b. Suwayd b. Ṣāmit—before his repentance, as I have heard—and Muʿattib b. Qushayr, and Rāfiʿ b. Zayd, and Bishr, were called to Islam. But some men among the Muslims summoned them, in a dispute that arose among them, to the Messenger of God ﷺ, while they summoned them to the soothsayers, the arbiters of the people of the Jāhiliyyah. So God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning them: Have you not seen those who claim that they believe in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you, desiring to take their disputes for judgment to the ṭāghūt, though they were commanded to reject it? And Satan desires to lead them far astray—until the end of the account. [From the Khazraj, the Hypocrites in Madinah] And from the Khazraj, then from the Banū al-Najjār: Rāfiʿ b. Wadīʿah, Zayd b. ʿAmr, ʿAmr b. Qays, and Qays b. ʿAmr b. Sahl. [From the Banū Jusham, the Hypocrites in Madinah] And from the Banū Jusham b. al-Khazraj, then from the Banū Salimah: al-Jadd b. Qays. He is the one who says: “O Muḥammad, give me leave, and do not tempt me.” So God, Exalted, revealed concerning him: And among them is he who says, “Give me leave, and do not tempt me.” Surely into temptation they have fallen. And surely Jahannam surrounds the disbelievers—until the end of the account.
