[ مِنْ بَنِي عَوْفٍ المنافقين في المدينة ] وَمِنْ بَنِي عَوْفِ بْنِ الْخَزْرَجِ: عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أُبَيِّ بْنِ سَلُولٍ، وَكَانَ رَأْسَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَإِلَيْهِ يَجْتَمِعُونَ، وَهُوَ الَّذِي قَالَ: لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ فِي غَزْوَةِ بَنِي الْمُصْطَلِقِ. وَفِي قَوْلِهِ ذَلِكَ، نَزَلَتْ سُورَةُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ بِأَسْرِهَا. وَفِيهِ وَفِي وَدِيعَةَ - رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَنِي عَوْفٍ - وَمَالِكِ بْنِ أَبِي قَوْقَلَ، وَسُوَيْدٍ، وَدَاعِسٌ، وَهُمْ مِنْ رَهْطِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أُبَيِّ بْنِ سَلُولٍ، وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أُبَيِّ بْنِ سَلُولٍ. فَهَؤُلَاءِ النَّفَرُ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَدُسُّونَ إلَى بَنِي النَّضِيرِ حَيْنَ حَاصَرَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: أَنْ اُثْبُتُوا، فَوَاَللَّهِ لَئِنْ أُخْرِجْتُمْ لَنَخْرُجَنَّ مَعَكُمْ وَلَا نُطِيعُ فِيكُمْ أَحَدًا أَبَدًا وَإِنْ قُوتِلْتُمْ لَنَنْصُرَنَّكُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِيهِمْ: أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ نَافَقُوا يَقُولُونَ لِإِخْوَانِهِمُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ لَئِنْ أُخْرِجْتُمْ لَنَخْرُجَنَّ مَعَكُمْ وَلَا نُطِيعُ فِيكُمْ أَحَدًا أَبَدًا وَإِنْ قُوتِلْتُمْ لَنَنْصُرَنَّكُمْ وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ ثُمَّ الْقِصَّةُ مِنْ السُّورَةِ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إلَى قَوْلِهِ: كَمَثَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ إِذْ قَالَ لِلْإِنْسَانِ اكْفُرْ فَلَمَّا كَفَرَ قَالَ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِنْكَ إِنِّي أَخَافُ اللَّهَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Translation
✧ [Of the Banū ʿAwf hypocrites in Madinah] And of the Banū ʿAwf b. al-Khazraj: ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl, who was the head of the hypocrites and to whom they gathered, and he is the one who said: "If we return to Madinah, the mightier will surely expel from it the meaner," in the expedition of the Banū al-Muṣṭaliq. And concerning his saying that, the entire Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn was revealed. And concerning him and Wadīʿah—a man of the Banū ʿAwf—and Mālik b. Abī Qawqal, and Suwayd, and Dāʿis, who are of the kinsfolk of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl—and ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl—these are the company of his people who were secretly sending to the Banū al-Naḍīr when the Messenger of God ﷺ besieged them: "Hold out, for by God, if you are expelled, we will surely go out with you, and we will never obey anyone concerning you, and if you are fought, we will surely help you." And God bears witness. So God Most High revealed concerning them: "Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture: 'If you are expelled, we will surely go out with you, and we will never obey anyone concerning you, and if you are fought, we will surely help you'? And God bears witness that they are indeed liars." Then the story continues in the sūrah until it ends at His saying: "Like the example of Satan when he says to man, 'Disbelieve,' but when he disbelieves, he says, 'Indeed, I am disassociated from you; indeed, I fear God, Lord of the worlds.'"
