Translation

✧ [From Banū Ẓafar, the hypocrites in Madinah] Ibn Isḥāq said: And from Banū Ẓafar—Ẓafar's name being Kaʿb b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj—was Ḥāṭib b. Umayyah b. Rāfiʿ. He was an old, bulky man who had become senile in his pre-Islamic days, and he had a son who was among the best of the Muslims, called Yazīd b. Ḥāṭib. He was struck at the battle of Uḥud until wounds disabled him, so he was carried to the abode of Banū Ẓafar. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me that the Muslim men and women who were there gathered around him while he was dying, and they began to say, "Rejoice, O son of Ḥāṭib, at Paradise." He said: His hypocrisy then emerged. His father began to say, "Yes, by God, a paradise of ḥarmal! By God, you have deceived this poor man regarding himself." Ibn Isḥāq said: And Bishr b. Ubayriq, who is Abū Ṭuʿmah, the thief of the two coats of mail, concerning whom God Almighty revealed: "And do not argue on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Indeed, God does not love one who is a sinful betrayer." And Quzmān, an ally of theirs. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ used to say, "He is indeed one of the people of the Fire." When the day of Uḥud came, he fought a fierce fight until he killed several of the polytheists, then wounds disabled him, and he was carried to the abode of Banū Ẓafar. Some Muslim men said to him, "Rejoice, O Quzmān, for you have fought valiantly today, and what you see has befallen you in the cause of God." He said, "For what should I rejoice? By God, I fought only out of zeal for my people." When his wounds became severe and pained him, he took an arrow from his quiver and cut the veins of his hand with it, killing himself.
