Translation

✧ [Among Banū Umayyah, the hypocrites in al-Madīnah] And among Banū Umayyah b. Zayd b. Mālik: Wadīʿah b. Thābit, who was among those who built the mosque of Ḍirār, and he was the one who said: “We were only engaging in vain talk and jesting.” So Allah, blessed and exalted, sent down: “And if you ask them, they will surely say, ‘We were only engaging in vain talk and jesting.’ Say, ‘Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?’” to the end of the story. [Among Banū ʿUbayd, the hypocrites in al-Madīnah] And among Banū ʿUbayd b. Zayd b. Mālik: Khidhām b. Khālid, who was the one from whose house the mosque of Ḍirār was taken, and Bishr and Rāfiʿ, the two sons of Zayd. [Among Banū al-Nabīt, the hypocrites in al-Madīnah] And among Banū al-Nabīt – Ibn Hishām said: al-Nabīt is ʿAmr b. Mālik b. al-Aws – Ibn Isḥāq said: then among Banū Ḥārithah b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj b. ʿAmr b. Mālik b. al-Aws: Mirbaʿ b. Qayẓī, who was the one who said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he passed through his wall while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was heading to Uḥud: “I do not permit you, O Muḥammad, if you are a prophet, to pass through my wall.” And he took a handful of dust in his hand, then said: “By Allah, if I knew that I would not hit anyone but you with this dust, I would throw it at you.” So the people hastened to kill him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Leave him, for this is the blind one, blind of heart, blind of insight.” Then Saʿd b. Zayd, the brother of Banū ʿAbd al-Ashhal, struck him with a bow and wounded his head; and his brother Aws b. Qayẓī, who was the one who said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of the Trench: “O Messenger of Allah, our houses are exposed, so permit us to return to them.” So Allah, exalted, sent down concerning him: “They say, ‘Our houses are exposed,’ but they are not exposed; they only intend to flee.” Ibn Hishām said: ʿawrah means exposed to the enemy and lost, and its plural is ʿawrāt. Al-Nābighah al-Dhubyānī said: When you meet them you will not find the house exposed, nor the neighbor deprived, nor the matter lost. And this verse is among verses of his. And al-ʿawrah (also) means a man's ʿawrah, which is his private area. And al-ʿawrah (also) means the shameful part.
