Translation
✧ Those of the hypocrites of the Helpers who joined the Jews [Of the hypocrites of Banū ʿAmr in Madinah] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among those who attached themselves to the Jews, of those named to us from the hypocrites of the Aws and the Khazraj—and God knows best—of the Aws, then of Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf b. Mālik b. al-Aws, then of Banū Lawdhān b. ʿAmr b. ʿAwf: Zuwayy b. al-Ḥārith. [Of the hypocrites of Banū Khubayb in Madinah] And of Banū Khubayb b. ʿAmr b. ʿAwf: Julās b. Suwayd b. al-Ṣāmit and his brother al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd. [Something about Julās among the hypocrites in Madinah] And Julās is the one who said—and he was among those who stayed behind from the Messenger of God ﷺ in the expedition of Tabūk—"If this man is truthful, we are worse than donkeys." That saying of his was reported to the Messenger of God ﷺ by ʿUmayr b. Saʿd, one of them, who was in the care of Julās; Julās had succeeded his father with regard to his mother after his father. ʿUmayr b. Saʿd said to him: "By God, O Julās, you are the dearest of people to me, the best of them in my eyes in kindness, and the most precious of them to me that anything hateful should befall him; and you have said a saying which, if I report it against you, will disgrace you, and if I keep silent about it, my religion will perish; and one of the two is easier for me than the other." Then he went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned to him what Julās had said. Julās swore by God to the Messenger of God ﷺ: "ʿUmayr has lied against me, and I did not say what ʿUmayr b. Saʿd said." Then God, exalted and majestic, revealed concerning him: "They swear by God they did not say it, but they did say the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their submission, and they aspired to what they did not attain, and they found fault only because God and His Messenger enriched them of His bounty. If they repent, it will be better for them, but if they turn away, God will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no protector or helper on earth." Ibn Hishām said: al-alīm means al-mūjiʿ (painful). Dhū al-Rumma said, describing camels: "And they raise from the chests of sturdy, tall camels; a scorching, painful heat strikes their faces." And this line is in a poem of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: They alleged that he repented, and his repentance was good, until good and submission were known of him.
