Translation
✧ Something regarding al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd, one of the hypocrites in Madinah. And his brother al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd, who killed al-Mujadhdhar b. Dhiyād al-Balawī, and Qays b. Zayd, one of the Banū Ḍubayʿah, on the day of Uḥud. He went out with the Muslims, and he was a hypocrite. When the people met, he attacked the two of them and killed them, then he joined Quraysh. Ibn Hishām said: Al-Mujadhdhar b. Dhiyād had killed Suwayd b. Ṣāmit in one of the wars that took place between the Aws and the Khazraj. When the day of Uḥud came, al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd sought an opportunity against al-Mujadhdhar b. Dhiyād, to kill him in revenge for his father, so he killed him alone. And I heard more than one of the people of knowledge say: The evidence that he did not kill Qays b. Zayd is that Ibn Isḥāq did not mention him among those killed at Uḥud. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muʿādh b. ʿAfrāʾ killed Suwayd b. Ṣāmit treacherously, in no war. He shot him with an arrow and killed him before the day of Buʿāth. Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ—as they mention—had commanded ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb to kill him if he got hold of him, but he escaped him. He was in Makkah; then he sent to his brother Julās seeking repentance, so that he might return to his people. So God, blessed and exalted be He, revealed concerning him—as it has reached me from Ibn ʿAbbās—: “How shall God guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and bore witness that the Messenger is true, and clear signs came to them? And God guides not the wrongdoing people,” to the end of the narrative. Of the Banū Ḍubayʿah, one of the hypocrites in Madinah. And of the Banū Ḍubayʿah b. Zayd b. Mālik b. ʿAwf b. ʿAmr b. ʿAwf: Bijād b. ʿUthmān b. ʿĀmir. Of the Banū Lawdhān, one of the hypocrites in Madinah. And of the Banū Lawdhān b. ʿAmr b. ʿAwf: Nabtal b. al-Ḥārith. He is the one to whom the Messenger of God ﷺ—as it has reached me—said: “Whoever would love to look at Satan, let him look at Nabtal b. al-Ḥārith.” He was a huge man, dark, with disheveled hair on his head, red eyes, and ruddy cheeks. He used to come to the Messenger of God ﷺ and speak with him and listen to him, then transmit his talk to the hypocrites. He is the one who said: “Muḥammad is only an ear; whoever tells him something, he believes it.” So God, mighty and majestic be He, revealed concerning him: “And among them are those who hurt the Prophet and say, ‘He is an ear.’ Say: ‘An ear of good for you. He believes in God and believes the believers, and is a mercy to those of you who believe. And those who hurt the Messenger of God, for them is a painful punishment.’” Ibn Isḥāq said: Some of the men of Balʿijlān related to me that he was told: Gabriel ﷺ came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said to him: “There sits with you a dark man with disheveled hair on his head, ruddy cheeks, red eyes, as though they were two pots of brass; his liver is coarser than the liver of a donkey. He transmits your talk to the hypocrites, so beware of him.” And that was the description of Nabtal b. al-Ḥārith, as they mention.
