The reason for their enmity
Translation
✧ The enemies among the Jews [the cause of their enmity] Ibn Isḥāq said: On account of that the rabbis of the Jews showed enmity to the Messenger of God ﷺ, out of oppression, envy, and rancor, because of that with which God Most High distinguished the Arabs, namely His taking His Messenger from among them. And there joined them men from the Aws and the Khazraj who had persisted in their paganism; thus they were people of hypocrisy upon the religion of their fathers, namely polytheism and denial of the resurrection, except that Islam overpowered them by its emergence and their people's gathering around it. So they displayed Islam and took it as a shield from being killed, while they acted as hypocrites in secret. Their inclination was with the Jews, because of their denying the Prophet ﷺ and their rejecting Islam. The rabbis of the Jews were the ones who questioned the Messenger of God ﷺ and sought to trouble him, and brought him ambiguities so as to confound truth with falsehood. Thus the Qurʾān would descend concerning them regarding what they asked about, except for a few questions about the lawful and the unlawful which the Muslims asked about.
