The dream of ʿUmar concerning the call to prayer and the revelation preceding it

Translation

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: And Abū Qays Ṣirmah also said:: Glorify God at the rising of every morning whose sun has risen, and at every crescent. The knower of the secret and the open is with us; what our Lord has said is not error. To Him belong the birds that seek sustenance and shelter in nests among the secure mountains. To Him belong the wild beasts in the desert—you see them on the sand-dunes and in the shade of the sands. To Him the Jews judaized and professed every religion, when you mention a grave matter. To Him the Christians raised their crosses and stood at every feast for their Lord, in celebration. To Him the secluded monk—you see him pledged to hardship, though he was once of easy mind. O sons of the womb, do not sever its ties, and join them, the short to the long. Fear God concerning the weak orphans; perhaps what is not lawful is deemed lawful. Know that the orphan has a guardian, knowing, who is guided without asking. Then do not consume the orphan's property; indeed the orphan's property is watched over by a protector. O my sons, do not displace the boundary markers; indeed displacing the markers carries a penalty. O my sons, do not trust the days, and beware of their guile and the passage of the nights. Know that their passing is for the end of creation, whether new or worn. Unite your affair upon piety and godfearing, and the renunciation of obscenity and the taking of what is lawful. And Abū Qays Ṣirmah also said, mentioning how God, Blessed and Exalted, honored them with Islam, and what God singled them out for with the descent of His Messenger ﷺ upon them:: He stayed in Quraysh some ten odd years, reminding, if he could meet a congenial friend. He presented himself to the people of the fairs, but saw none to give shelter, and saw no caller. When he came to us, God made His religion manifest, and he became joyful in Ṭaybah, content. He found a true friend, and the journey's distance was set at rest by him, and he had manifest help from God. He relates to us what Noah said to his people, and what Moses said when he answered the caller. He became one who fears no single person among the people, near or far. We gave him our wealth from the lawful portion of our property, and ourselves at the battle and in sharing. We know that God—there is nothing besides Him—and we know that God is the best of guides. We are enemies to whoever is an enemy among all the people together, even if he was the bosom friend. I say when I call upon you at every pledge: Blessed are You; I have called upon Your name much. I say when I traverse a fearful land: Your mercy, do not let the enemies prevail over me. Tread, turning aside; indeed deaths are many, and you leave no remnant for yourself. By God, the young man does not know how to be cautious if God has not appointed for him a protector. The abundant palm trees do not trouble their Lord when they become well-watered and he becomes a dweller. Ibn Hishām said: The verse that begins: 'Tread, turning aside; indeed deaths are many' and the verse that follows it: 'By God, the young man does not know how to be cautious' are by al-Afwūn al-Taghlibī, who is Ṣuraym b. Maʿshar, among some verses of his.
