The dream of ʿUmar concerning the call to prayer and the revelation preceding it

Translation

✧ Abū Qays b. Abī Anas. Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ was settled in his abode, and God made His religion manifest there, and gladdened him with the Emigrants and the Helpers whom He gathered to him from the people of his guardianship, Abū Qays Ṣirmah b. Abī Anas, brother of the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār, said. [His lineage] Ibn Hishām said: Abū Qays, Ṣirmah b. Abī Anas b. Ṣirmah b. Mālik b. ʿAdī b. ʿĀmir b. Ghanm b. ʿAdī b. al-Najjār. [His Islam and something of his poetry] Ibn Isḥāq said: He was a man who had devoted himself to religion in the Jāhiliyyah, wore haircloth, abandoned idols, washed from major impurity, purified himself from menstruating women, and considered Christianity, then refrained from it. He entered a house of his and made it a mosque, into which no menstruating or ritually impure person entered upon him, and he said: 'I worship the Lord of Abraham when he abandoned the idols and disliked them,' until the Messenger of God ﷺ came to Madinah, whereupon he embraced Islam and his Islam was excellent, though he was an old man. He was a speaker of truth, magnifying God (mighty and glorious) in his Jāhiliyyah, saying beautiful poems about that—he is the one who said: Abū Qays says, and he set out in the morning: 'What you can of my counsel, do it. I counsel you by God, and piety, and godliness, and your honors—piety toward God is first. If your people have attained mastery, do not envy them, and if you are people of leadership, act justly. If one of the calamities befalls your people, place yourselves before the clan. If a heavy debt befalls them, be kind to them; and what they burden you with in misfortunes, bear. If you become poor, practice chastity; and if the surplus of good remains among you, give generously.' Ibn Hishām said: It is also related: 'If a momentous matter befalls, assist them.'
