ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib at the Kaʿbah seeking God's help to repel Abrahah
Translation
✧ When they had left him, ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib went to Quraysh and told them the news, and he commanded them to leave Makkah and to take refuge in the mountain peaks and ravines, fearing for them the harm of the army. Then ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib arose, took hold of the ring of the door of the Kaʿbah, and with him stood a group of Quraysh, calling upon God and seeking His aid against Abrahah and his army. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said, while holding the ring of the door of the Kaʿbah: O God, a servant defends his own riding beasts, so defend Your sacred places. Let not their cross and their cunning ever overcome Your sacred precincts. Al-Wāqidī added: If You are leaving them and our qiblah, then it is a matter as You see fit. Ibn Hishām said: This is what is authentic of it.
