ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Ḥunāṭah, and Khuwaylid before Abrahah
Translation
✧ ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, Ḥunāṭah and Khuwaylid before Abrahah He said: ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was the most handsome of the people, the most beautiful of them, and the greatest of them. When Abrahah saw him, he honored him, held him in high esteem, and treated him with respect, too much to seat him below him. He disliked that the Abyssinians see him sitting with him on the throne of his kingdom. So Abrahah came down from his throne and sat on his carpet, and seated him with him on it at his side. Then he said to his interpreter: "Say to him: What is your need?" So the interpreter said that to him. He said: "My need is that the king return to me two hundred camels of mine which he has seized." When he said that to him, Abrahah said to his interpreter: "Say to him: You had impressed me when I saw you; then I lost interest in you when you spoke to me. Do you speak to me about two hundred camels of yours which I have seized, and leave a house which is your religion and the religion of your fathers, which I have come to destroy? Do you not speak to me about it?" ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said to him: "I am the owner of the camels, and the house has an owner who will protect it." He said: "It will not be protected from me." He said: "You and that." And as some of the people of knowledge claim, there went with ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib to Abrahah, when he sent Ḥunāṭah to him, Yaʿmur b. Nufāthah b. ʿAdī b. al-Duʾil b. Bakr b. Manāh b. Kinānah, who was then the chief of Banū Bakr, and Khuwaylid b. Wāthilah al-Hudhalī, who was then the chief of Hudhayl. They offered Abrahah a third of the wealth of Tihāmah, on condition that he turn back from them and not destroy the house, but he refused them. And Allah knows best whether that was so or not. Then Abrahah returned to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib the camels which he had seized from him.
