Dhū Nafr and Unays and their intercession for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib with Abrahah
Translation
✧ [ Dhū Nafr and Unays, and their mediation for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib before Abrahah ] So ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib departed with him, and with him some of his sons, until he came to the army. He asked about Dhū Nafr, who was a friend of his, until he entered upon him while he was in his prison. He said to him: O Dhū Nafr, do you have any means to help us with what has befallen us? Dhū Nafr said to him: What can a captive do who is in the hands of a king, awaiting to be killed morning or evening? I have no means to help with anything that has befallen you, except that Unays, the driver of the elephant, is a friend of mine. I will send to him and commend you to him, and place great weight on your right, and ask him to seek permission for you to see the king, so that you may speak to him as you see fit. And he will intercede for you with him for good, if he is able to do that. He said: That is enough for me. So Dhū Nafr sent to Unays and said to him: ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib is the chief of Quraysh and the owner of the caravan of Makkah. He feeds the people in the plain and the wild beasts on the mountain tops. The king has seized two hundred camels of his. Seek permission for him to see him, and benefit him with him as much as you can. He said: I will do it. So Unays spoke to Abrahah and said to him: O king, this chief of Quraysh is at your gate seeking permission to see you. He is the owner of the caravan of Makkah, and he feeds the people in the plain and the wild beasts on the mountain tops. Grant him permission to see you, so that he may speak to you about his need, and treat him well. He said: So Abrahah granted him permission.
