Translation
✧ [ Ḥunāṭah and ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ] Abrahah dispatched Ḥunāṭah al-Ḥimyarī to Makkah, and said to him: Ask about the chief of the people of this town and its nobleman, then say to him: The king says to you: I have not come to fight you; I have come only to destroy this House. If you do not oppose me with war on its account, I have no need for your blood. If he does not desire war with me, then bring him to me. When Ḥunāṭah entered Makkah, he asked about the chief of Quraysh and its nobleman, and he was told: ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Quṣayy. He went to him and said to him what Abrahah had commanded him. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said to him: By God, we do not want war with him, and we have no strength for that. This is the Sacred House of God and the House of His friend Ibrāhīm ﷺ — or as he said — if He defends it from him, it is His House and His sanctuary. And if He leaves the way open between him and it, by God, we have no means of defending it. Ḥunāṭah said to him: Then come with me to him, for he has commanded me to bring you to him.
