Translation

✧ [The statement of Ibn al-Zibaʿrā, and what God revealed concerning him] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ stood up, and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā al-Sahmī came forward and sat down. Al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah said to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā: By God, al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith did not stand up for the son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib just now, nor did he sit down. Muḥammad has claimed that we and what we worship of these gods of ours are fuel for Hell. So ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā said: By God, if I found him, I would defeat him in argument. Ask Muḥammad: Is everything worshiped besides God in Hell with those who worshiped it? For we worship the angels, the Jews worship ʿUzayr, and the Christians worship Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon them both). Al-Walīd and those with him in the assembly marveled at the words of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zibaʿrā, and they thought that he had argued and contended well. That statement of Ibn al-Zibaʿrā was mentioned to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: Every one who loves to be worshiped besides God is with those who worshiped him; they only worship the devils and those who commanded them to worship them. Then God, exalted is He, revealed to him concerning that: "Indeed, those for whom the best [reward] has preceded from Us—they will be far removed from it. They will not hear its sound, and they will abide in what their souls desire"—meaning Jesus son of Mary, ʿUzayr, and those who were worshiped among the rabbis and monks who passed away in obedience to God, whom the people of error who worshiped them took as lords besides God. And it was revealed concerning what they mention, that they worship the angels and that they are daughters of God: "And they say, 'The Most Merciful has taken a son.' Glory be to Him! Rather, they are honored servants. They do not precede Him in speech, and they act by His command," up to His saying: "And whoever of them says, 'Indeed, I am a god besides Him'—that one We will recompense with Hell. Thus do We recompense the wrongdoers." And it was revealed concerning what is mentioned about Jesus son of Mary, that he is worshiped besides God, and the marvel of al-Walīd and those present at his argument and contention: "And when the son of Mary is cited as an example, behold, your people turn away from him"—that is, they turn away from your command by that saying of theirs. Then He mentioned Jesus son of Mary and said: "He is only a servant upon whom We bestowed favor, and We made him an example for the Children of Israel. And if We willed, We could have made from you angels succeeding [one another] on the earth. And indeed, he is knowledge of the Hour, so do not doubt it, and follow Me. This is a straight path"—that is, the signs I placed upon his hands, of reviving the dead and curing diseases, suffice as a proof of knowledge of the Hour. He says: So do not doubt it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.
