Translation
✧ [Al-Akhnas b. Sharīq, and what God revealed concerning him] (Ibn Isḥāq said): Al-Akhnas b. Sharīq b. ʿAmr b. Wahb al-Thaqafī, an ally of the Banū Zuhrah, was one of the nobles of the people and one of those to whom men listened. He used to assail the Messenger of God ﷺ and reply against him, so God Almighty revealed concerning him: “And do not obey every contemptible swearer, a defamer going about with slander” up to His Almighty saying: “zanīm.” He did not say “zanīm” as a defect in his lineage, because God does not defect anyone by lineage, but He thereby confirmed his description so that he might be known. Al-zanīm is the one attached to a people. Al-Khaṭīm al-Tamīmī said in the Jāhiliyyah: “A zanīm whom men claim as an addition, as the forelegs are added to the width of the tanned hide.” [Al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah, and what God Almighty revealed concerning him] And al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah said: “Is it sent down upon Muḥammad while I am left aside, though I am the elder of Quraysh and its chief, and Abū Masʿūd ʿAmr b. ʿUmayr al-Thaqafī, the chief of Thaqīf, is left aside, while we are the two great ones of the two towns?” So God Almighty revealed concerning him, as it has reached me: “And they said, ‘Why was this Qurʾān not sent down upon a great man from one of the two towns?’” up to His Almighty saying: “from what they amass.”
