Translation
✧ [The harm that al-Naḍr used to inflict on the Messenger of God ﷺ, and what was revealed concerning him] Al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAlqamah b. Kaladah b. ʿAbd Manāf b. ʿAbd al-Dār b. Quṣayy, whenever the Messenger of God ﷺ sat in a gathering, called therein to God Almighty, recited therein the Qur'an, and warned Quraysh therein of what had befallen the former nations, would take his place in the gathering after he rose, and would tell them about Rustum the mighty, about Isfandiyār, and the kings of Persia. Then he would say: 'By God, Muḥammad is no better a storyteller than I, and his talk is nothing but the fables of the ancients, which he has written down just as I have written them down.' So God revealed concerning him: 'And they say: "Fables of the ancients which he has written down, so they are recited to him morning and evening." Say: "He has sent it down who knows the secret in the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving, Merciful"' (Q 25:5–6). And concerning him was revealed: 'When Our verses are recited to him, he says: "Fables of the ancients"' (Q 68:15). And concerning him was revealed: 'Woe to every sinful liar, who hears the verses of God recited to him, then persists arrogantly as if he had not heard them. So give him tidings of a painful punishment' (Q 45:7–8). Ibn Hishām said: al-affāk means the liar. In the Book of God Almighty: 'Indeed, it is of their falsehood that they say: "God has begotten," and indeed they are liars' (Q 37:151–152). Ruʾbah b. al-ʿAjjāj said: 'What is it to a man who tells lies, speaking falsehood?' This verse is in a long poem of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ sat one day—as I was told—with al-Walīd b. al-Mughīrah in the mosque. Al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith came and sat with them in the gathering, and in the gathering there was more than one man of Quraysh. The Messenger of God ﷺ spoke, and al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith confronted him. The Messenger of God spoke to him until he silenced him. Then he recited to him and to them: 'Indeed, you and what you worship besides God are the fuel of Hell. You will come to it. Had these been gods, they would not have come to it. And all will abide therein forever. For them therein is sighing, and they therein will not hear' (Q 21:98–100). Ibn Hishām said: ḥaṣab of Hell means everything with which it is kindled. Abū Dhuʾayb al-Hudhalī, whose name is Khuwaylid b. Khālid, said: 'So extinguish and do not kindle, and be not a stirrer of the fire of the enemies, lest their spite fly abroad.' This verse is among verses of his. It is also transmitted: 'and be not a stirrer.' Another poet said: 'I stirred up my fire for him, so he saw its light; had it not been for the stirring of the fire, he would not have been guided.'
