Sirat Ibn Hisham 407

Translation

✧ [What Abu Jahl used to do to harm the Messenger of God ﷺ, and what was revealed concerning him] Abu Jahl b. Hisham met the Messenger of God ﷺ — as has reached me — and said to him: "By God, O Muhammad, you shall surely desist from reviling our gods, or we shall surely revile your God whom you worship." Then God Almighty revealed concerning him: "And do not revile those whom they call upon besides God, lest they revile God in enmity without knowledge." It has been mentioned to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ then desisted from reviling their gods, and began to call them to God.
