Translation

✧ [The mention of the harm with which Umayyah b. Khalaf used to afflict the Messenger of God ﷺ] And Umayyah b. Khalaf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Jumaḥ, when he saw the Messenger of God ﷺ, he would slander him and defame him, so God Almighty revealed concerning him: "Woe to every slanderer and defamer, who amasses wealth and counts it, thinking that his wealth will make him immortal. No! He will surely be cast into the Crusher. And what will make you know what the Crusher is? It is the kindled fire of God, which rises over the hearts. Indeed, it will be closed down upon them, in extended columns." Ibn Hishām said: al-humazah is the one who insults a man openly, narrowing his eyes at him, and winking at him. Ḥassān b. Thābit said: "I slandered you and abased myself to a contemptible soul with a rhyming verse blazing like a flame." And this verse is in a qaṣīdah of his. Its plural is hamazāt. And al-lumazah is the one who faults people secretly and harms them. Ruʾbah b. al-ʿAjjāj said: "In the shadow of my age, my falsehood and my defaming." And this verse is in an urjūzah of his, and its plural is lamazāt.
