Translation

✧ An account of what the Messenger of God ﷺ encountered from his people in the way of harm. [What God Most High sent down concerning Abū Lahab.] So when God protected him from them, and his uncle and his people from the Banū Hāshim and the Banū al-Muṭṭalib stood in his defense and prevented them from what they intended in the way of seizing him, Quraysh began to revile him, mock him, and dispute with him. And the Qur’an began to come down concerning Quraysh's misdeeds, and concerning those among them who set themselves to oppose him. Among them were those who were named to us, and among them were those concerning whom the Qur’an came down among the generality of the disbelievers whom God mentioned. Among those of Quraysh who were named to us and concerning whom the Qur’an came down were his uncle Abū Lahab b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and his wife Umm Jamīl bt. Ḥarb b. Umayya, the carrier of firewood. God Most High called her the carrier of firewood because, as it has reached me, she used to carry thorns and cast them on the path of the Messenger of God ﷺ wherever he passed. So God Most High sent down concerning the two of them: 'Perish the hands of Abū Lahab, and perish he! His wealth and what he has earned will not avail him. He will burn in a fire with flames, and his wife, the carrier of firewood, with a rope of palm fiber around her neck.' Ibn Hishām said: al-jīd means the neck. Aʿshā Banī Qays b. Thaʿlaba said: 'The day when Qutayla reveals to us a slender neck that necklaces adorn.' And this verse is in a poem of his. Its plural is ajyād. And al-masad is a tree that is beaten as flax is beaten, and ropes are twisted from it. Al-Nābigha al-Dhubyānī, whose name was Ziyād b. ʿAmr b. Muʿāwiya, said: 'Hurled with the packed flesh of muscle, its mature she-camel has a creaking like the creaking of the pulley with palm-fiber rope.' And this verse is in a poem of his. Its singular is masada.
