Translation

✧ [Abū Jahl's molestation of Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām, and Abū al-Bakhtarī's intervention] They recount that Abū Jahl b. Hishām encountered Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām b. Khuwaylid b. Asad, who had a servant carrying wheat intended for his aunt Khadījah bt. Khuwaylid—she being with the Messenger of God ﷺ, with him in the mountain pass. He grabbed hold of him and said: "Are you taking food to the Banū Hāshim? By God, neither you nor your food will move until I disgrace you in Makkah." Then Abū al-Bakhtarī b. Hāshim b. al-Ḥārith b. Asad came and said: "What is the matter between you and him?" He said: "He is carrying food to the Banū Hāshim." Abū al-Bakhtarī said to him: "It is food belonging to his aunt, which she had with him and for which she sent to him. Would you prevent him from bringing her own food to her? Let the man go." Abū Jahl refused until one of them got at the other, and Abū al-Bakhtarī took a camel's jawbone and struck him with it, splitting his head open, and trampled him severely. Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib was nearby watching that, and they were loath for it to reach the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions, lest they gloat over them. Meanwhile, the Messenger of God ﷺ kept calling his people night and day, secretly and openly, proclaiming God's command and fearing no one among the people in it.
