Sirat Ibn Hisham 400
Translation
✧ [Abu Lahab's mocking of the Messenger ﷺ, and what God revealed concerning him] Ibn Ishaq said: Husayn b. ʿAbd Allah narrated to me that Abu Lahab met Hind bt. ʿUtbah b. Rabiʿah, when she had parted from her people and had aided Quraysh against them, and he said: "O daughter of ʿUtbah, have you supported al-Lat and al-ʿUzza, and parted from those who parted from them and aided against them?" She said: "Yes, and may God reward you well, O Abu ʿUtbah." Ibn Ishaq said: I was told that he used to say, among other things he said: "Muhammad promises me things I do not see. He claims they will come to pass after death. What has he put in my hands after that?" Then he would blow into his hands and say: "Perish you both! I see in you nothing of what Muhammad says." So God most high revealed concerning him: "Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he!" Ibn Hisham said: tabbat means "she lost." And al-tabab means "loss." Habib b. Khudrah al-Khariji, one of the Banu Hilal b. ʿAmir b. Saʿsaʿah, said: O Tayyib, we are among a people whose efforts have gone into ruin and loss. And this verse is in a poem of his.
