Translation

✧ [The account of Umm ʿAbd Allāh regarding ʿUmar's conversion to Islam] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAyyāsh b. Abī Rabīʿah narrated to me, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, from his mother Umm ʿAbd Allāh bt. Abī Ḥathmah, who said: By God, we were preparing to depart for the land of Abyssinia, and ʿĀmir had gone on some errand of ours, when ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb came and stood over me while he was still upon his polytheism. She said: And we used to meet from him affliction, harm to us, and severity against us. She said: He said: So it is indeed departure, O Umm ʿAbd Allāh? She said: I said: Yes, by God, we shall surely go forth in God's land, for you have harmed us and oppressed us, until God makes a way out. She said: He said: May God accompany you. And I saw in him a tenderness I had not seen before. Then he departed, grieved—as I saw—by our departure. She said: Then ʿĀmir came with that errand of his, and I said to him: O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, if you had seen ʿUmar just now, and his tenderness and his grief for us. He said: Do you have hope that he will embrace Islam? She said: I said: Yes. He said: The one you saw will not embrace Islam until the donkey of al-Khaṭṭāb embraces Islam. She said: [He said this] out of despair concerning him, because of what he saw of his harshness and severity against Islam.
