Translation

✧ The Islam of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ [The Muslims’ pride in the Islam of ʿUmar] Ibn Isḥāq said: When ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ and ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿah came back to Quraysh and did not attain what they sought from the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the Negus sent them back with what they disliked, and ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb accepted Islam—and he was a man of firm resolve whose back was not to be coveted—the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ were protected by him and by Ḥamzah until they prevailed over Quraysh. And ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd used to say: We were not able to pray at the Kaʿbah until ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb accepted Islam. When he accepted Islam, he fought Quraysh until he prayed at the Kaʿbah, and we prayed with him. And ʿUmar’s acceptance of Islam was after the departure of those of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ who departed to Abyssinia. Al-Bakkāʾī said, he said: Misʿar b. Kidām narrated to me, from Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm, who said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd said: ʿUmar’s acceptance of Islam was a conquest, his emigration was a victory, and his rule was a mercy. We could not pray at the Kaʿbah until ʿUmar accepted Islam. When he accepted Islam, he fought Quraysh until he prayed at the Kaʿbah, and we prayed with him.
