Translation

✧ [THE POETRY OF ʿABD ALLĀH B. AL-ḤĀRITH ON THE EMIGRATION TO ABYSSINIA] Among the poetry that was composed regarding Abyssinia was what ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Qays b. ʿAdī b. Saʿd b. Sahm said when they found safety in the land of Abyssinia, praised the protection of the Negus, and worshipped God without fearing anyone for that, and the Negus had treated them well as neighbours when they settled with him. He said: O rider, convey from me a message that penetrates deep To whoever hopes for the deliverance of God and the religion: Every servant of God is oppressed In the belly of Makkah, subjugated and afflicted. We have found God's lands wide, Saving from humiliation, disgrace, and abasement. So do not remain upon the humiliation of life and disgrace In death and a reproach that is not secure. We have followed the Messenger of God, while they cast aside The word of the Prophet and tipped the scales. So make Your punishment upon the people who transgressed, And I seek refuge with You lest they rise up and oppress me. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith also said, mentioning Quraysh's expulsion of them from their land and reproaching some of his people for that: My liver refuses — I will not lie to you — to fight them On my behalf, and my fingertips also refuse it. How can I fight a people who disciplined you Upon the truth, that you should not mix it with falsehood? The servants of the jinn expelled them from the free part of their land, And they awoke upon a matter of severe tribulations. If there was any trustworthiness among the clan of ʿAdī, ʿAdī b. Saʿd, out of piety or close ties, I had indeed hoped that that would be found among you, By praise of the One who is not deceived by bribes. And I was replaced by a cub, the cub of every vile woman, With one of wickedness, the refuge of the weak and the widows. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith also said: Those are Quraysh, denying God His due As ʿĀd, Madyan, and al-Ḥijr denied. If I do not flash like lightning, then may no expanse of land Contain me, nor any sea, In a land where Muḥammad worshipped the Deity, I shall make clear what is in the soul when the matter is brought to a head. Thus ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith — may God have mercy on him — was named al-Mubriq ("the Flashing One") because of his verse in which he said: ["If I do not flash like lightning…"].
