Translation

✧ [Poem of ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn on that matter, concerning the emigration to Abyssinia.] And ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn said, reproaching Umayyah b. Khalaf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfah b. Jumaḥ, who was his paternal cousin and used to harm him because of his Islam. Umayyah was a nobleman among his people in that time of his: O Taym b. ʿAmr, for the one who came with hatred— And beyond him are al-Sharmān and al-Bark, all together— Did you expel me from the belly of Makkah in safety, And lodge me in a court of shining white, one that drives away? You feather arrows whose feathers do not suit you, And you fashion arrows whose feathers are all for you. You fought against noble, mighty peoples, And you destroyed peoples by whom you used to seek refuge. You will know, if a calamity ever befalls you And the rabble abandon you, what you have been doing. And Taym b. ʿAmr, the one whom ʿUthmān addresses, is Jumaḥ; his name was Taym.
