Zayd b. ʿAmr, what he attained, and something about him

Translation

✧ [Al-Khaṭṭāb and his blocking the path of Zayd b. Nufayl, and Zayd's departure to Syria and his death] Al-Khaṭṭāb had harmed Zayd until he drove him out to the upper part of Makkah, and he settled at Ḥirāʾ facing Makkah. Al-Khaṭṭāb set over him young men of Quraysh and fools of its fools, and said to them: Do not let him enter Makkah. So he would not enter it except secretly from them, and when they learned of that they informed al-Khaṭṭāb, and they drove him out and harmed him, disliking that he should corrupt their religion for them and that anyone of them should follow him in departing from it. He said, while magnifying his sanctity over those who deemed lawful of him what they deemed lawful from his people: O God, I am in a state of iḥrām with no way out; my house is in the middle of the stopping place, by al-Ṣafā, not one of misguidance. Then he departed seeking the religion of Ibrāhīm ﷺ, asking the monks and the rabbis, until he reached al-Mawṣil and all of al-Jazīrah. Then he came back and roamed all of Syria, until he ended at a monk in Mayfaʿah in the land of al-Balqāʾ, to whom the knowledge of the Christians, as they claimed, ultimately went. He asked him about the ḥanīfiyyah, the religion of Ibrāhīm. He said: You are seeking a religion for which you will not find anyone to guide you today, but the time of a prophet has drawn near who will come forth from your land from which you departed. He will be sent with the religion of Ibrāhīm, the ḥanīfiyyah. So join it, for he is now being sent; this is his time. He had tasted Judaism and Christianity, and he was not pleased with anything of either of them. So he departed quickly, when that monk had said to him what he said, heading for Makkah, until when he was in the middle of the lands of Lakhm they attacked him and killed him.
