Translation

✧ [Warqah’s elegy for Zayd] Warqah b. Nawfal b. Asad said, weeping for him: You were rightly guided and blessed, O son of ʿAmr, and indeed you avoided an oven of blazing fire. By your religion you sought a Lord like whom there is no lord, and you abandoned the idols of the tyrants just as they are. And you attained the religion that you had sought, and you were not heedless of the oneness of your Lord. And you have come to be in an abode whose station is noble, where you are diverted with honor, delighting. You meet the Friend of God there, and you were not among the people a tyrant plunging toward the Fire. The mercy of a man’s Lord may reach him even if he is beneath the earth by seventy valleys. Ibn Hishām said: The first two verses of it are related on the authority of Umayyah b. Abī al-Ṣalt, and the last of them as a verse in a poem of his; and his saying “the idols of the tyrants” is reported from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
