The soothsayer of the Ḥijāz and her advice to ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib

Translation

✧ [ The female diviner of the Ḥijāz and what she advised ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ] So they set out until they came to Madinah, and they found her – according to what they claim – in Khaybar. So they rode until they came to her, and they asked her, and ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib related to her his story and the story of his son, and what he intended for him and his vow concerning him. So she said to them: 'Go back from me today until my familiar spirit comes to me and I ask him.' So they returned from her. And when they had gone out from her, ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib stood up calling upon God. Then they went to her in the morning, and she said to them: 'The news has already come to me. How much is the blood-money among you?' They said: 'Ten camels.' And it was indeed so. She said: 'Then return to your land, then bring forward your companion, and bring forward ten camels, then cast the divining arrows for them and for him. If they come out against your companion, then increase the camels until your Lord is pleased. And if they come out against the camels, then sacrifice them on his behalf, for your Lord is pleased and your companion is saved.'
