ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and his sons before the keeper of the divining arrows

Translation

✧ [The coming out of the arrow against ʿAbd Allāh, his father's proceeding to sacrifice him, and Quraysh's preventing him] Ibn Isḥāq said: And ʿAbd Allāh was—as they claim—the most beloved of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib's children to him, so ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib used to think that if the arrow missed him, then it had spared him. He is the father of the Messenger of God ﷺ. When the keeper of the arrows took the arrows to draw with them, ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib stood by Hubal calling upon God, then the keeper of the arrows drew, and the arrow came out against ʿAbd Allāh. So ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib took him by the hand and took the knife, then he turned with him to Isāf and Nāʾilah to sacrifice him. Quraysh rose to him from their assemblies and said: "What do you want, O ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib?" He said: "I shall sacrifice him." Quraysh and his sons said to him: "By God, you shall never sacrifice him until you find an excuse in him. If you do this, a man will keep coming with his son until he sacrifices him. What survival of people is there upon this?" Al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Makhzūm b. Yaqaẓah said to him—and ʿAbd Allāh was the son of the sister of the people—: "By God, you shall never sacrifice him until you find an excuse in him. If his ransom is with our wealth, we shall ransom him." Quraysh and his sons said to him: "Do not do it. Take him to the Ḥijāz, for there is a diviner there who has a familiar spirit. Ask her, then you are upon the head of your affair: if she commands you to sacrifice him, you shall sacrifice him; and if she commands you to an affair in which there is relief for you and for him, accept it."
