The account of Rabi'a b. Nasr, king of Yemen

Translation

✧ [Rabiʿah b. Nasr and Shiqq] Then Shiqq came to him, and he said to him the like of what he had said to Satiḥ, concealing from him what Satiḥ had said, to see whether they would agree or differ. He said: “Yes, I saw coals of fire, coming out of darkness, falling between a meadow and a hill, and they ate from it every creature with breath.” He said: When he said that to him, and he knew that they had agreed and that their statement was one, except that Satiḥ had said: “It fell in the land of Tihāmah, and it ate from it every creature with a skull,” while Shiqq said: “It fell between a meadow and a hill, and it ate from it every creature with breath.” The king said to him: “You have not missed anything of it, O Shiqq. What do you have concerning its interpretation?” He said: “I swear by what lies between the two ḥarrahs of any human, the blacks will surely descend upon your land, and they will surely prevail over every tender-fingered one, and they will surely possess what lies between Abyan and Najrān.” The king said to him: “By your father, O Shiqq, this is grievous and painful to us. When will it be? In my time, or after it?” He said: “No, rather after it by a time. Then a great one of importance will rescue you from them, and make them taste the severest humiliation.” He said: “And who is this great one of importance?” He said: “A boy, neither base nor mean, who will come out against them from the house of Dhū Yazan, and he will not leave any one of them in Yemen.” He said: “Will his dominion endure, or will it be cut off?” He said: “Rather it will be cut off by a sent messenger who will bring truth and justice, among the people of religion and excellence. The kingdom will be among his people until the Day of Decision.” He said: “And what is the Day of Decision?” He said: “A day in which governors are recompensed, and in which calls are made from heaven with summonses, heard by the living and the dead, and in which people are gathered together for the appointed time, in which will be for the God-fearing success and blessings.” He said: “Is what you say true?” He said: “Yes, by the Lord of the heaven and the earth, and what is between them of elevation and descension, indeed what I have told you is true; there is no falsehood in it.” Ibn Hishām said: amḍi means doubt; this is in the language of Ḥimyar. Abū ʿAmr said: amḍi means false. [The migration of Rabiʿah b. Naṣr to Iraq] Then what they had said fell into the soul of Rabiʿah b. Naṣr. So he equipped his sons and his household for Iraq with what would set them aright, and he wrote for them to a king of the kings of Persia called Sābūr b. Khurrazādh, and he settled them in al-Ḥīrah.
