The Birth of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, His Administration, and His Death

Translation

✧ [THE BIRTH OF ʿABD AL-MUṬṬALIB AND THE REASON FOR HIS BEING NAMED THUS] She bore Hāshim's son ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and she named him Shaybah. Hāshim left him with her until he was a young servant or a little above that. Then his uncle al-Muṭṭalib went out to take him and bring him to his own land and people. Salmá said to him: 'I will not send him with you.' Al-Muṭṭalib said to her: 'I will not turn back until I bring him out with me. My brother's son has come of age, and he is a stranger among a people not his own. We are a house of honour among our people, and we have charge of many of their affairs. His own people, his land, and his clan are better for him than staying among others,' or words to that effect. Shaybah said to his uncle al-Muṭṭalib, as they claim: 'I will not part from her unless she gives me permission.' She gave him permission and handed him over to him. He took him up and entered Makkah with him riding behind him on his camel. Quraysh said: 'ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib has bought him.' It is for this that Shaybah was named ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. Al-Muṭṭalib said: 'Woe to you! He is only the son of my brother Hāshim. I have brought him from Madinah.'
