An Account of the Disagreement That Occurred Among Quraysh after Quṣayy

Translation

✧ Mention of what occurred of the disagreement of Quraysh after Qusayy [and the confederacy of al-Muṭayyabūn] [the dispute between Banū ʿAbd al-Dār and their cousins] Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Qusayy b. Kilāb died, and his sons after him maintained his authority over his people and others. They allotted Makkah into quarters—after he had previously apportioned it to his people—so they would divide them among their people and among others of their allies, and sell them. Quraysh remained upon that with them, there being no disagreement or dispute among them. Then Banū ʿAbd Manāf b. Qusayy—ʿAbd Shams, Hāshim, al-Muṭṭalib, and Nawfal—agreed to take what was in the hands of Banū ʿAbd al-Dār b. Qusayy of what Qusayy had entrusted to ʿAbd al-Dār: the ḥijābah (guardianship of the Kaʿbah), the liwāʾ (standard), the siqāyah (providing water to pilgrims), and the rifādah (provisioning the pilgrims). They considered that they were more entitled to that than them because of their nobility over them and their excellence among their people. So at that Quraysh split: one faction sided with Banū ʿAbd Manāf in their view, considering them more deserving of it than Banū ʿAbd al-Dār because of their standing among their people; and another faction sided with Banū ʿAbd al-Dār, holding that what Qusayy had entrusted to them should not be taken away from them. [Those who supported Banū ʿAbd al-Dār and those who supported their cousins] The leader of Banū ʿAbd Manāf was ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf, because he was the eldest of Banū ʿAbd Manāf. The leader of Banū ʿAbd al-Dār was ʿĀmir b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf b. ʿAbd al-Dār. Banū Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Qusayy, Banū Zuhrah b. Kilāb, Banū Taym b. Murrah b. Kaʿb, and Banū al-Ḥārith b. Fihr b. Mālik b. al-Naḍr were with Banū ʿAbd Manāf. Banū Makhzūm b. Yaqaẓah b. Murrah, Banū Sahm b. ʿAmr b. Huṣayṣ b. Kaʿb, Banū Jumaḥ b. ʿAmr b. Huṣayṣ b. Kaʿb, and Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb were with Banū ʿAbd al-Dār. ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy and Muḥārib b. Fihr went out and were not with either of the two parties. So each group bound themselves with a solemn covenant that they would not fail one another and would not surrender one another as long as the sea wets a woolen tuft.
