The Poetry of Rizāḥ in His Support of Quṣayy and Quṣayy's Response to Him

✧ [What Quṣayy gave exclusively to ʿAbd al-Dār] Ibn Isḥāq said: When Quṣayy grew old and his bones became frail—and ʿAbd al-Dār was his firstborn, while ʿAbd Manāf had gained honor in his father's time and reached every distinction, as had ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā and ʿAbd—Quṣayy said to ʿAbd al-Dār: "By God, my son, I will surely attach you to the people, even if they have surpassed you in honor: no man among them shall enter the Kaʿbah until you are the one to open it for him; no war banner shall be bound for Quraysh except by your hand; no one shall drink in Makkah except from your water-rights; no one among the people of the festival shall eat food except from your food; and Quraysh shall decide no matter of their affairs except in your house." He gave him his house, the House of Assembly, in which Quraysh decide no matter of their affairs except therein. He gave him the veiling, the banner, the watering, and the rifādah. [The rifādah] The rifādah was a levy that Quraysh used to exact at every festival from their wealth to Quṣayy b. Kilāb, with which he would prepare food for the pilgrims, and whoever had no means or provisions would eat it. That was because Quṣayy imposed it upon Quraysh, and he said to them when he commanded them to do it: "O assembly of Quraysh, you are the neighbors of God, the people of His House, and the people of the sacred precinct. The pilgrims are the guests of God and the visitors of His House, and they are the guests most entitled to generous treatment. So provide food and drink for them during the days of the pilgrimage until they depart from you." So they did. They would exact for that every year from their wealth a levy and hand it to him, and he would make it into food for the people during the days of Minā. That practice of his continued among his people in the time of ignorance until Islam arose, and then it continued in Islam up to this day of yours. It is the food that the ruler prepares every year at Minā for the people until the pilgrimage concludes. Ibn Isḥāq said: My father Isḥāq b. Yasār narrated to me this account of the affair of Quṣayy b. Kilāb, and what he said to ʿAbd al-Dār regarding what he handed over to him of what was in his hands, from al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ. He said: I heard him saying that to a man of the Banū ʿAbd al-Dār called Nubayh b. Wahb b. ʿĀmir b. ʿIkrimah b. ʿĀmir b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf b. ʿAbd al-Dār b. Quṣayy. Al-Ḥasan said: So Quṣayy assigned to him everything of the affair of his people that was in his hands, and Quṣayy was never opposed, and nothing he did was ever rejected.
