An Account of the Disagreement That Occurred Among Quraysh after Quṣayy

Translation

✧ [Those who entered the alliance of al-Muṭayyabīn] Banū ʿAbd Manāf brought out a bowl filled with perfume. They claim that one of the women of Banū ʿAbd Manāf brought it out for them, and they placed it for their allies in the mosque near the Kaʿbah. Then the people dipped their hands in it, and they and their allies made a pact and covenant, then wiped the Kaʿbah with their hands as a confirmation upon themselves, so they were called al-Muṭayyabīn. [Those who entered the alliance of al-Aḥlāf] Banū ʿAbd al-Dār made a pact and covenant, they and their allies, near the Kaʿbah, a solemn alliance, that they would not forsake one another, nor would any of them surrender another, so they were called al-Aḥlāf. [Distribution of tribes in war] Then the tribes were arrayed and joined one to another. Banū ʿAbd Manāf were drawn up against Banū Sahm, Banū Asad against Banū ʿAbd al-Dār, Zuhrah against Banū Jumaḥ, Banū Taym against Banū Makhzūm, and Banū al-Ḥārith b. Fihr against Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb. Then they said: "Let every tribe destroy those assigned to it." [What the people agreed upon] While the people were thus resolved on war, they called one another to peace, on condition that Banū ʿAbd Manāf be given the watering and the rifādah, and that the ḥijābah, the banner, and the dār al-nadwah remain to Banū ʿAbd al-Dār as they had been. They did so, and each of the two parties was satisfied with that. The people desisted from war, and each group remained with those they had allied with, and they continued thus until God Most High brought Islam. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Whatever alliance there was in the Jāhiliyyah, Islam only increased it in strength."
