The Poetry of Rizāḥ in His Support of Quṣayy and Quṣayy's Response to Him

Translation
✧ [The poetry of Rizāḥ on his support for Qusayy and Qusayy's reply to him] Ibn Isḥāq said: When Qusayy finished his war, his brother Rizāḥ b. Rabīʿah returned to his lands with those of his people who were with him, and Rizāḥ said in response to Qusayy: When a messenger from Qusayy came, the messenger said, “Answer the friend.” We rose to him, leading the steeds, and cast off from ourselves the weary and heavy. We traveled with them by night until morning, and hid by day lest we halt. They are swift as the coming of sand-grouse to water; they answer with us the messenger of Qusayy. We gathered from the secret from Ash-madhayn and from every tribe we gathered a clan. What a night of racing you had, increasing over a thousand in flowing bounty. When we passed by ʿAsjad and descended from Mustanākh a road, and passed by the corner of Warqān and passed by al-ʿArj with a tribe dwelling, we passed by the camp without tasting it, and struggled through Marr for a long night. We bring near to the protected mares their foals, desiring that they would steal the neighing. When we reached Makkah, we made lawful the men, tribe by tribe. We exchanged with them the edge of swords, and in every direction we snatched away the minds. We baked them with the hardness of the vultures, the baking of the strong, the mighty and the lowly. We killed Khuzāʿah in their abode, and Bakr we killed, and Jīl, generation after generation. We expelled them from the lands of the King, so they may not dwell in any plain. Their captives became in iron, and from every tribe we healed the thirst. And Thaʿlabah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Dhubyān b. al-Ḥārith b. Saʿd Hudhaym al-Quḍāʿī said about that matter of Qusayy when he called them and they answered him: We brought the horses, lean and racing, from al-Aʿrāf, the Aʿrāf of al-Jināb, to the lowlands of Tihāmah, and we met from the desert in an empty plain. As for Ṣūfah the hermaphrodite, they left their dwellings in fear of the striking. And Banū ʿAlī stood when they saw us, to the swords like camels longing for their young. And Qusayy b. Kilāb said: I am the son of the protectors, Banū Luʾayy; in Makkah is my dwelling and there I was raised. To al-Baṭḥāʾ, Maʿadd has known, and its Marwah, I am pleased with it, I am pleased. I am not of Ghālib if the children of Qaydhar and al-Nabīt do not settle therein. Rizāḥ is my helper and by him I am named; I do not fear oppression as long as I live. [What occurred between Rizāḥ and Nahd and Ḥawtakah, and Qusayy's poetry about that] When Rizāḥ b. Rabīʿah settled in his lands, God spread him and spread Ḥunn, and they are the two clans of ʿUdhrah today. There had been something between Rizāḥ b. Rabīʿah, when he arrived in his lands, and Nahd b. Zayd and Ḥawtakah b. Aslum, and they are two sub-tribes of Quḍāʿah. He made them afraid until they joined Yemen and were expelled from the lands of Quḍāʿah, and they are today in Yemen. Qusayy b. Kilāb said—and he loved Quḍāʿah and its growth and its gathering in its lands, because of the kinship between him and Rizāḥ, and because of their trial in his cause when they answered him when he called them to his support, and he disliked what Rizāḥ did to them: Oh, would that someone convey from me to Rizāḥ, for I have blamed you in two things. I blamed you concerning Banū Nahd b. Zayd, as you separated between them and me. And Ḥawtakah b. Aslum—indeed a people whom they distressed have distressed me. Ibn Hishām said: These verses are also attributed to Zuhayr b. Janāb al-Kalbī.
