The account of the capture of Ukaydir and then the peace agreement with him
Translation
✧ [The account of the capture of Ukaydir and then his reconciliation] Then the Messenger of God ﷺ summoned Khālid b. al-Walīd and sent him to Ukaydir of Dūmah. He was Ukaydir b. ʿAbd al-Malik, a man of Kindah who was king over it, and he was a Christian. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to Khālid: "You will find him hunting wild cows." Khālid set out until he was within sight of his fortress, on a moonlit summer night, while he was on a roof of his with his wife. The wild cows spent the night rubbing their horns against the gate of the palace. His wife said to him: "Have you ever seen the like of this?" He said: "No, by God." She said: "Who would leave these?" He said: "No one." So he went down and ordered his horse, and it was saddled for him. He rode with a number of his household, among them a brother called Ḥassān. He mounted, and they went out with him with their spears. When they came out, the cavalry of the Messenger of God ﷺ met them and seized him, and they killed his brother. He had on a qabāʾ of brocade interwoven with gold, which Khālid stripped from him and sent to the Messenger of God ﷺ before he himself brought him to him. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me from Anas b. Mālik, who said: "I saw the qabāʾ of Ukaydir when it was brought to the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Muslims began to touch it with their hands and marvel at it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Do you marvel at this? By Him in whose hand is my soul, the handkerchiefs of Saʿd b. Muʿādh in Paradise are finer than this.'" Ibn Isḥāq said: Then Khālid brought Ukaydir to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He spared his blood and made peace with him on condition of the jizyah. Then he let him go, and he returned to his village. A man of Ṭayyiʾ called Bujayr b. Bujrah said, mentioning the words of the Messenger of God ﷺ to Khālid: "You will find him hunting wild cows," and what the cows did that night until they drew him out, in confirmation of the words of the Messenger of God ﷺ: Blessed be the driver of the wild cows; indeed I saw God guiding every guide. Whoever turns aside from Dhū Tabūk, we have indeed been commanded to strive. [The return to Madinah] The Messenger of God ﷺ stayed at Tabūk for some ten nights, not going beyond it, then departed returning to Madinah.
