The Ansar felt aggrieved at being denied, so the Messenger appeased them
Translation
✧ [The Ansar resented being deprived, so the Messenger appeased them] Ibn Hisham said: Ziyad b. ʿAbd Allah narrated to me, saying: Ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, saying: And ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me, from Maḥmūd b. Labīd, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī. He said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ gave what he gave of those gifts in Quraysh and in the tribes of the Arabs, and there was nothing of them among the Anṣār, this clan of the Anṣār found resentment within themselves, until much talk arose among them, until one of them said: By God, the Messenger of God has met his own people. Then Saʿd b. ʿUbādah entered upon him and said: O Messenger of God, this clan of the Anṣār have found against you within themselves, because of what you did in this spoil you obtained: you divided among your people and gave great gifts to the tribes of the Arabs, and there was nothing of them in this clan of the Anṣār. He said: And where are you in that, O Saʿd? He said: O Messenger of God, I am only of my people. He said: Then gather your people for me in this enclosure. He said: Saʿd went out and gathered the Anṣār in that enclosure. He said: Some men of the Emigrants came, and he left them; they entered, and others came, and he turned them back. When they had gathered for him, Saʿd came to him and said: This clan of the Anṣār has gathered for you. So the Messenger of God ﷺ came to them, praised God and extolled Him as He deserves, then said: O company of the Anṣār, what is this talk that has reached me from you, and this anger you have found against me within yourselves? Did I not come to you erring, and God guided you; poor, and God enriched you; enemies, and God united your hearts? They said: Yes, God and His Messenger are more gracious and more excellent. Then he said: Will you not answer me, O company of the Anṣār? They said: With what shall we answer you, O Messenger of God? To God and to His Messenger belong grace and excellence. He ﷺ said: By God, if you wished, you would say, and you would speak truth and be believed: You came to us rejected, and we believed you; forsaken, and we helped you; driven out, and we sheltered you; poor, and we shared with you. Do you find within yourselves, O company of the Anṣār, over a trifle of this world by which I reconciled a people so that they might submit, while I entrusted you to your Islam? Are you not content, O company of the Anṣār, that the people go with the sheep and the camel, and you return with the Messenger of God to your homes? By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, if not for the emigration, I would be a man of the Anṣār. And if the people took a mountain pass and the Anṣār took a mountain pass, I would take the mountain pass of the Anṣār. O God, have mercy on the Anṣār, and on the sons of the Anṣār, and on the sons of the sons of the Anṣār. He said: The people wept until they wetted their beards, and they said: We are content with the Messenger of God as our portion and lot. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ departed, and they dispersed.
