Distributing the spoils of Hunayn among those who pledged allegiance
Translation
✧ [The poetry of Ḥassān concerning the deprivation of the Anṣār] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Najīḥ narrated to me from his father similarly. Ibn Hishām said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ gave what he gave among Quraysh and the tribes of the Arabs, and did not give the Anṣār anything, Ḥassān b. Thābit said, reproaching him for that: Cares increased, and the water of the eye pours down, streaming when a copious tear sets it flowing, out of longing for Shammāʾ, since Shammāʾ is a voluptuous woman, slender, in whom there is no blemish and no weakness. Leave off Shammāʾ, since her affection was scant, and the worst union of a uniter is scanty. And come to the Messenger and say, O best one trusted by the believers when humans are counted: Why are Sulaym summoned while they are far off, before a people who sheltered and helped? God named them Anṣār for their helping the religion of guidance while the fires of war blaze. They hastened in the way of God and acknowledged calamities, and they did not flag or complain. The people are a single party against us concerning you; we have nothing but swords, spearheads, and armor. We fight the people, sparing no one, and we do not neglect what the sūrahs inspire. The gatherers of war do not growl at our assembly while we, when its fire blazes, are flames. As we repelled at Badr, short of what they sought, the people of hypocrisy, and among us victory descends. We are your army on the day of al-Naʿf at Uḥud, when Muḍar, out of arrogance, mustered its parties. We did not weaken, we did not betray, and they did not experience from us a stumble, though all the people have stumbled.
