Distributing the spoils of Hunayn among those who pledged allegiance
[ سُئِلَ الرَّسُولُ عَنْ عَدَمِ إِعْطَائِهِ جُعَيْلًا فَأَجَابَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ التَّيْمِيُّ: أَنَّ قَائِلًا قَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَعْطَيْتُ عُيَيْنَةَ بْنَ حِصْنٍ وَالْأَقْرَعَ بْنَ حَابِسٍ مِئَةً مِئَةً، وَتَرَكْتُ جُعَيْلَ بْنَ سُرَاقَةَ الضَّمْرِيَّ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: أَمَا وَاَلَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَجُعَيْلُ بْنُ سُرَاقَةَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ طِلَاعِ الْأَرْضِ، كُلُّهُمْ مِثْلُ عُيَيْنَةَ بْنِ حِصْنٍ وَالْأَقْرَعِ بْنِ حَابِسٍ، وَلَكِنِّي تَأَلَّفْتهمَا لِيُسْلِمَا، وَوَكَلْتُ جُعَيْلَ بْنَ سُرَاقَةَ إلَى إسْلَامِهِ. [ اعْتِرَاضُ ذِي الْخُوَيْصِرَةِ التَّمِيمِيِّ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمَّارِ بْنِ يَاسِرٍ، عَنْ مِقْسَمِ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ، مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ، قَالَ: خَرَجْتُ أَنَا وَتَلِيدُ بْنُ كِلَابٍ اللَّيْثِيُّ، حَتَّى أَتَيْنَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ، وَهُوَ يَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ، مُعَلِّقًا نَعْلَهُ بِيَدِهِ، فَقُلْنَا لَهُ: هَلْ حَضَرْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ حِينَ كَلَّمَهُ التَّمِيمِيُّ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي تَمِيمٍ، يُقَالُ لَهُ ذُو الْخُوَيْصِرَةِ، فَوَقَفَ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ يُعْطِي النَّاسَ، فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، قَدْ رَأَيْتُ مَا صَنَعْتَ فِي هَذَا الْيَوْمِ؛ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: أَجَلْ، فَكَيْفَ رَأَيْتُ ؟ فَقَالَ: لَمْ أَرَكَ عَدَلْتُ ؟ قَالَ: فَغَضِبَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: وَيْحَكَ إذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ الْعَدْلُ عِنْدِي، فَعِنْدَ مَنْ يَكُونُ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَلَا أَقْتُلُهُ ؟ فَقَالَ لَا، دَعْهُ فَإِنَّهُ سَيَكُونُ لَهُ شِيعَةٌ يَتَعَمَّقُونَ فِي الدِّينِ حَتَّى يَخْرُجُوا مِنْهُ كَمَا يَخْرُجُ السَّهْمُ مِنْ الرَّمِيَّةِ يُنْظَرُ فِي النَّصْلِ، فَلَا يُوجَدُ شَيْءٌ، ثُمَّ فِي الْفِدْحِ، فَلَا يُوجَدُ شَيْءٌ، ثُمَّ فِي الْفُوقِ، فَلَا يُوجَدُ شَيْءٌ، سَبَقَ الْفَرْثَ وَالدَّمَ. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ، وَسَمَّاهُ ذَا الْخُوَيْصِرَةِ
Translation
✧ [ The Messenger was asked about not giving to Juʿayl, and he answered ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥārith al-Taymī narrated to me that a speaker from among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, you gave ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn and al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis a hundred each, and you left Juʿayl b. Surāqah al-Ḍamrī.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indeed, by Him in whose hand is Muḥammad’s soul, Juʿayl b. Surāqah is better than the fill of the earth, all of them, like ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn and al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis, but I reconciled their hearts so that they might submit, and I entrusted Juʿayl b. Surāqah to his Islam.” [ The objection of Dhū al-Khuwayṣirah al-Tamīmī ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū ʿUbaydah b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmmār b. Yāsir narrated to me, from Miqsam Abū al-Qāsim, the client of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Nawfal, who said: I went out with Talīd b. Kilāb al-Laythī until we came to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ while he was circumambulating the House, hanging his sandals in his hand. We said to him: “Were you present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the Tamīmī spoke to him on the day of Ḥunayn?” He said: “Yes. A man from Banū Tamīm called Dhū al-Khuwayṣirah came and stood over him while he was giving to the people and said: ‘O Muḥammad, I have seen what you have done today.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Yes, and how did you see it?’ He said: ‘I did not see you act justly.’ He said: The Prophet ﷺ became angry, then said: ‘Woe to you! If justice is not with me, then with whom is it?’ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, shall I not kill him?’ He said: ‘No, leave him, for he will have a following who go deep into the religion until they depart from it as the arrow departs from the game. One looks at the arrowhead and finds nothing, then at the shaft and finds nothing, then at the notch and finds nothing. It has outrun the dung and the blood.’” Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn Abū Jaʿfar narrated to me the like of the ḥadīth of Abū ʿUbaydah, and he named him Dhū al-Khuwayṣirah.
