The division of the spoils
Translation
✧ [The Division of the Fayʾ] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ had finished returning the captives of Ḥunayn to their people, he mounted, and the people followed him saying, “O Messenger of God, divide among us some fayʾ of the camels and the sheep,” until they pressed him against a tree, and it snatched his cloak from him. He said, “Give me back my cloak, O people! By God, if you had livestock as numerous as the trees of Tihāmah, I would divide it among you. Then you would not find me miserly, nor cowardly, nor a liar.” Then he stood beside a camel, took a hair from its hump, placed it between his two fingers, then raised it and said, “O people, by God, I have nothing of your fayʾ, not even this hair, except the fifth, and the fifth is returned to you. So return the needle and the thread, for wrongful taking will be upon its people as disgrace, fire, and shame on the Day of Resurrection.” He said: A man of the Anṣār came with a ball of hair threads and said, “O Messenger of God, I took this ball to make with it a saddle-cloth for a camel of mine that has a sore back.” He said, “As for my share of it, it is yours.” He said, “Now that it has reached this, I have no need of it,” then he threw it from his hand. Ibn Hishām said: Zayd b. Aslam mentioned, from his father, that ʿAqīl b. Abī Ṭālib entered on the day of Ḥunayn upon his wife Fāṭimah bt. Shaybah b. Rabīʿah, and his sword was smeared with blood. She said, “I know that you have fought, so what have you obtained from the spoils of the polytheists?” He said, “Take this needle with which to sew your clothes,” and he handed it to her. Then he heard the caller of the Messenger of God ﷺ saying, “Whoever has taken something, let him return it, even the needle and the thread.” So ʿAqīl returned and said, “I think your needle is as good as gone,” and he took it and threw it among the spoils.
