The Messenger's favor upon Hawazin
Translation
✧ [The Conversion of Mālik b. ʿAwf al-Naṣrī] The Messenger of God ﷺ said to the delegation of Hawāzin, and he asked them about Mālik b. ʿAwf, “What has he done?” They said: “He is in al-Ṭāʾif with Thaqīf.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Tell Mālik that if he comes to me as a Muslim, I will return to him his family and his property, and I will give him a hundred camels.” So Mālik came to that, and he departed from al-Ṭāʾif. Mālik had feared Thaqīf for himself, lest they learn that the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him what he said, and they would detain him. So he ordered his riding camel to be prepared for him, and he ordered a horse of his to be brought to him in al-Ṭāʾif. He went out at night, mounted his horse, and spurred it until he came to his riding camel where he had ordered it to be kept. He mounted it and caught up with the Messenger of God ﷺ, reaching him at al-Jiʿrānah or at Makkah. He returned to him his family and his property, and gave him a hundred camels. He became a Muslim, and his Islam was good. Mālik b. ʿAwf said when he became a Muslim: I have not seen nor heard of anyone like him among all people, Like Muḥammad, most faithful and most generous in giving great gifts when asked; And whenever you wish, he will tell you about what is tomorrow, And when the battalion's fangs are bared, With the spear of Samhar and the striking of every Indian sword, He is like a lion over its cubs, In the midst of the thicket, a lurking beast in a lair. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ appointed him over those of his people who had become Muslims, and those tribes were Thumālah, Salimah, and Fahm. He fought Thaqīf with them; no grazing livestock of theirs went out but he raided it, until he pressed them hard. Abū Miḥjan b. Ḥabīb b. ʿAmr b. ʿUmayr al-Thaqafī said: The enemies feared our side, Then Banū Salimah raided us; Mālik came to us with them, Breaking the covenant and the sacred trust; They came to us in our homes, Though we had once been people of vengeance.
