The Messenger's favor upon Hawazin
Translation
✧ [The Messenger's gracious favor to Hawazin] Then the delegation of Hawazin came to him at al-Jiʿrānah, and the Messenger of God ﷺ had with him of the captives of Hawazin six thousand of the children and women, and of the camels and sheep what cannot be known in number. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb related to me, from his father, from his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr: that the delegation of Hawazin came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and they had become Muslims, and they said: 'O Messenger of God, we are a root and a tribe, and there has befallen us of affliction what is not hidden from you, so show favor to us; may God show favor to you.' He said: And a man of Hawazin stood up, then one of the Banū Saʿd b. Bakr, called Zuhayr, whose kunyah was Abū Ṣurad, and he said: 'O Messenger of God, in the enclosures are your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts, and your wet-nurses who used to care for you. If we had shown deference to al-Ḥārith b. Abī Shimr, or to al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir, and then he had come to us with the like of what you have brought upon us, we would have hoped for his kindness and his generosity toward us, and you are the best of those who have been cared for.' Ibn Hishām said: And it is related: 'If we had shown deference to al-Ḥārith b. Abī Shimr, or al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir.' Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb related to me, from his father, from his grandfather ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Which are dearer to you, your sons and your women, or your property?' They said: 'O Messenger of God, you have made us choose between our property and our lineages; rather return to us our women and our sons, for they are dearer to us.' He said to them: 'As for what belongs to me and to the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, it is yours. And when I have prayed the noon prayer with the people, rise and say: "We ask the intercession of the Messenger of God with the Muslims, and of the Muslims with the Messenger of God, for our sons and our women." Then I will give you at that time, and I will ask for you.' When the Messenger of God ﷺ had prayed the noon prayer with the people, they rose and spoke as he had commanded them. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'As for what belongs to me and to the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, it is yours.' The Emigrants said: 'And what belongs to us is for the Messenger of God ﷺ.' The Helpers said: 'And what belongs to us is for the Messenger of God ﷺ.' Al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis said: 'As for me and the Banū Tamīm, no.' ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn said: 'As for me and the Banū Fazārah, no.' ʿAbbās b. Mirdās said: 'As for me and the Banū Sulaym, no.' The Banū Sulaym said: 'Yes, what belongs to us is for the Messenger of God ﷺ.' He said: ʿAbbās b. Mirdās said to the Banū Sulaym: 'You have weakened me.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'As for whoever of you holds fast to his right in these captives, he shall have for every person six shares of the first captives I take.' So they returned to the people their sons and their women. Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Wajzah Yazīd b. ʿUbayd al-Saʿdī related to me: that the Messenger of God ﷺ gave ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ a slave-girl called Rayṭah bt. Hilāl b. Ḥayyān b. ʿUmayrah b. Hilāl b. Nāṣirah b. Quṣayyah b. Naṣr b. Saʿd b. Bakr, and he gave ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān a slave-girl called Zaynab bt. Ḥayyān b. ʿAmr b. Ḥayyān, and he gave ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb a slave-girl, and he gave her to his son ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar. Ibn Isḥāq said: Nāfiʿ, the client of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, related to me, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, who said: 'I sent her to my maternal uncles of the Banū Jumaḥ, so that they might set her right for me and prepare her, until I could circumambulate the House, then come to them, and I intended to have intercourse with her when I returned to her.' He said: 'Then I went out of the mosque when I had finished, and behold the people were hastening. I said: "What is the matter with you?" They said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ has returned to us our women and our sons." I said: "That companion of yours is with the Banū Jumaḥ, so go and take her." So they went to her and took her.' Ibn Isḥāq said: As for ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn, he took an old woman of the old women of Hawazin, and he said when he took her: 'I see an old woman; I think she has lineage in the tribe, and perhaps her ransom may be great.' When the Messenger of God ﷺ returned the captives for six shares, he refused to return her. Zuhayr Abū Ṣurad said to him: 'Take her from yourself, for by God her mouth is not cool, her breast is not full, her belly is not bearing, her husband is not finding, and her milk is not abundant.' So he returned her for six shares when Zuhayr said to him what he said. They claimed that ʿUyaynah met al-Aqraʿ b. Ḥābis and complained to him of that, and he said: 'By God, you did not take her as a fair virgin, nor as a plump middle-aged woman.'
