The release of Ubayy b. Malik from Marwan's custody and the poetry of al-Dahhak about it
Translation
✧ [The release of Ubayy b. Malik from Marwan's hand and al-Dahhak's poem on that] Ibn Ishaq said: Thaqif had seized the family of Marwan b. Qays al-Dawsi, who had embraced Islam and aided the Messenger of Allah ﷺ against Thaqif. Thaqif claimed—and it is what Thaqif claims, that it is from Qays—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Marwan b. Qays: "Take, O Marwan, for your family the first man of Qays you meet." He met Ubayy b. Malik al-Qushayri and seized him until they returned his family to him. Al-Dahhak b. Sufyan al-Kilabi then arose and spoke to Thaqif until they released Marwan's family and set free Ubayy b. Malik. Al-Dahhak b. Sufyan said concerning something that occurred between him and Ubayy b. Malik: Do you forget my kindness, O Ubayy b. Malik, on the morning when the messenger, turning away from you, was stern, Marwan b. Qays leading you by his rope, abased, like a docile, confined camel is led? Then a band from Thaqif came back to you; whenever a seeker of evil comes to them, they oblige. They were the masters, so their forbearance returned to you, though the soul had almost despaired of you. Ibn Hisham said: "They oblige" (yuqbisū) is from other than Ibn Ishaq.
