The Messenger was the first to shoot with a mangonel

Translation

✧ [ʿUyaynah and what he concealed of his intention] When the people set out, Saʿīd b. ʿUbayd b. Usayd b. Abī ʿAmr b. ʿIlāj called out: “Indeed, the tribe is staying.” He said: ʿUyaynah b. Ḥiṣn said: “Yes, by God, a noble and generous glory.” A Muslim man said to him: “May God fight you, O ʿUyaynah! You praise the polytheists for holding out against the Messenger of God ﷺ, when you have come to support the Messenger of God ﷺ?” He said: “By God, I did not come to fight Thaqīf alongside you, but I wanted Muḥammad to conquer al-Ṭāʾif so that I might obtain a slave-girl from Thaqīf and lie with her, in the hope that she would bear me a man, for Thaqīf are a people of hard lineage.” Some slaves who had been besieged in al-Ṭāʾif came down to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was encamped there, and they became Muslims, and the Messenger of God ﷺ set them free. [The freedmen of Thaqīf] Ibn Isḥāq said: One whom I do not suspect narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Mukaddam, from men of Thaqīf, who said: When the people of al-Ṭāʾif embraced Islam, a number of them spoke about those slaves, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “No, they are the freedmen of God.” Among those who spoke about them was al-Ḥārith b. Kaladah. Ibn Hishām said: Ibn Isḥāq named those of the slaves who came down.
