The Messenger was the first to shoot with a mangonel
[ رُؤْيَا الرَّسُولِ وَتَفْسِيرُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ لَهَا ] وَقَدْ بَلَغَنِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ وَهُوَ مُحَاصِرٌ ثَقِيفًا يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ، إنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَنِّي أُهْدِيَتْ لِي قَعْبَةٌ مَمْلُوءَةٌ زُبْدًا، فَنَقَرَهَا دِيكٌ، فَهَرَاقَ مَا فِيهَا. فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: مَا أَظُنُّ أَنْ تُدْرِكَ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَكَ هَذَا مَا تُرِيدُ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: وَأَنَا لَا أَرَى ذَلِكَ [ ارْتِحَالُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَسَبَبُ ذَلِكَ ] ثُمَّ إنَّ خُوَيْلَةَ بِنْتَ حَكِيمِ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ الْأَوْقَصِ السُّلَمِيَّةَ، وَهِيَ امْرَأَةُ عُثْمَانَ، قَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَعْطِنِي إنْ فَتَحَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ الطَّائِفَ حُلِيَّ بَادِيَةَ بِنْتِ غَيْلَانَ بْنِ مَظْعُونِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ، أَوْ حُلِيَّ الْفَارِعَةِ بِنْتِ عُقَيْلٍ، وَكَانَتَا مِنْ أَحْلَى نِسَاءِ ثَقِيفٍ. فَذُكِرَ لِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ لَهَا: وَإِنْ كَانَ لَمْ يُؤْذَنْ لِي فِي ثَقِيفٍ يَا خُوَيْلَةُ ؟ فَخَرَجَتْ خُوَيْلَةُ، فَذَكَرَتْ ذَلِكَ لِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ ( يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ): مَا حَدِيثٌ حَدَّثَتْنِيهِ خُوَيْلَةُ، زَعَمَتْ أَنَّكَ قُلْتَهُ ؟ قَالَ: قَدْ قُلْتَهُ ؟ قَالَ: أَوَمَا أُذِنَ لَكَ فِيهِمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ: لَا. قَالَ: أَفَلَا أُؤَذِّنُ بِالرَّحِيلِ ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى قَالَ: فَأَذَّنَ عُمَرُ بِالرَّحِيلِ
Translation
✧ [THE MESSENGER'S DREAM AND ABŪ BAKR'S INTERPRETATION OF IT] It has reached me that the Messenger of God ﷺ said to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq while he was besieging Thaqīf: "O Abū Bakr, I saw that a bowl full of butter was gifted to me, and a rooster pecked at it, so it spilled what was in it." Abū Bakr said: "I do not think that you will attain from them on this day of yours what you want." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "And I do not see that either." [THE DEPARTURE OF THE MUSLIMS AND ITS REASON] Then Khuwaylah bt. Ḥakīm b. Umayyah b. Ḥārithah b. al-Awqaṣ al-Sulamiyyah, the wife of ʿUthmān, said: "O Messenger of God, if God grants you victory over al-Ṭāʾif, give me the jewelry of Bādiyah bt. Ghaylān b. Maẓʿūn b. Salamah, or the jewelry of al-Fāriʿah bt. ʿUqayl—and they were among the most adorned women of Thaqīf." It was mentioned to me that the Messenger of God ﷺ said to her: "And even if permission has not been granted to me concerning Thaqīf, O Khuwaylah?" Khuwaylah went out and mentioned that to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He entered upon the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: "O Messenger of God, what is the statement that Khuwaylah related to me, claiming that you said it?" He said: "I said it." He said: "Has permission not been granted to you concerning them, O Messenger of God?" He said: "No." He said: "Shall I not announce departure?" He said: "Yes." He said: So ʿUmar announced departure.
